Here's a helpful vid, though he prefers lower action than me:Īs for the pickup height, on the thin e side the bridge pickup should be some 2.5mm from pole screw to the string bottom, neck pickup about 3.5-4mm.

You need a proper steel gauge or feeler gauges to measure it exactly. Lower than that will usually be too uncomfortable for bending, unless it's an Ibby or such (with huge frets and very flat board, there you can go lower). I prefer to set the B and G strings a tiny bit higher for easier bending, so with a well-fretted neck it goes like 1.5, 1.75, 1.8, 1.9, 1.95-2.0, 2.0-2.1 at the 17th fret. Also here, the flatter the fretboard, the lower you can go. You do that at the 17th fret, the high e should be about 1.5-1.7mm, the low E about 0.5mm more (with each string increasing for about. Only after the proper truss rod setup you can go and set the action. Setting the truss rod may require some time to settle, so you want to check that after a few hours and the day after to make sure it's settled. Less gap for flatter fretboard and more gap for a rounded fretboard. With short-scale guitars like Gibson it can be almost zero, with Strat-scale you want like. It must still be able to slightly ring and not buzz out completely, that's the best measure. With a feeler gauge, check the gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the 8th fret-see the spec chart below for the proper gap."īasically when you press the string at first and last fret, you want to have just a tiny, barely visible gap below the string at the 8th fret. "Affix a capo at the first fret and depress the sixth string at the last fret. You mean in general? See here, read the "Truss rod" and "Action" sections:
